*Props* to you, Jason! (Sculpture/Dimensional Studies, Performance Design Tech)
After graduating from Alfred University in May 2016 with a BFA from the School of Art and Design, Jason moved to the Washington, DC area for a year-long apprenticeship at the Olney Theatre Center doing “props” (properties). He resided with 15 other apprentices, the National Players touring company, and the occasional actor or designer and worked on 8 productions, including 3 musicals and 5 plays, 2 of which were national/regional premiers. Fun highlights include creating the items that magically come out of Mary Poppins' bag, baking over 125 edible pies for Sweeney Todd, working with Jim Steinmeyer (famous magic consultant for Broadway) and Chicago-based magician Brett Schneider on the regional premiere of The Magic Play. He also made a 3 ft. tall phrenology head out of papier mache for My Fair Lady.
When his apprenticeship ended, he accepted a position in August 2016 as assistant prop master at the Arizona Theatre Company (ATC) in Tucson, Arizona. ATC has a 6 show season and he has worked on each of the first 3: Man of La Mancha; Chapter Two by Neil Simon and directed by Simon’s ex-wife Marsha Mason; and The River Bride by Marisela Trevino Orta. This play was the winner of the 2013 National Latino Playwriting Award. It takes place in the Amazon rainforest, so the prop department built a 10 ft. long automated boat.
During all four years at Alfred University, Jason sang in Chamber Singers under the direction of Dr. Luanne Crosby. He also worked as props master on numerous productions at AU, creating unique and distinctive props. He also was an ensemble member of the theatre department’s production of The Mystery of Edwin Drood, directed by Professor Stephen Crosby. Since moving to Tucson, he has joined the University of Arizona's Community Choir. Their first concert was on Halloween and they sang Vivaldi's Gloria and Zelenka's Te Deum.
