From South Africa to Alfred New York
Accustomed to living in the urban environment of Pretoria, South Africa, Talulla Torthe was nervous about acclimating to life in an isolated, small town. She also knew that cold weather would be a radical change from what she was familiar with. AU’s diverse, progressive student body, and the university’s stunning natural surroundings, however, crystallized her decision to attend. Though the village may be small, and the winters may be harsh, Talulla discovered that she was not as isolated as she originally anticipated.
Talulla’s love for writing and cinematography, as well as her passion for activism, led her to major in communication studies and pursue a minor in film studies. She appreciates the personal attention and interest her professors have shown her. “I think it’s really easy to make a name for yourself at AU, and I love that,” Talulla shares. She works as the managing editor of the Fiat Lux student newspaper and hopes to go into conflict journalism after she graduates.
Talulla has also taken advantage of her time in America to travel. She’s visited South Carolina, Washington, Yellowstone National Park, Badlands National Park and other sites. She currently lives in Paris, France.
